Jack Rusmisel had worked with Gwen’s husband in San Francisco. Eugene became a CPA and took a job in Fremont with Clements Construction as their Controller. When they came back they moved to Oakland, and she got a job teaching in San Leandro where she taught first grade for four years. She taught fourth grade in Antioch, California in 1949.Īfter four years of dating, Gwen and Eugene went back to Nebraska to get married at her hometown church in 1952. Because there was an extreme shortage of teachers at that time, Gwen was able to get an emergency teaching certificate, and she began teaching elementary school after her first year of college classes. This was where she met her husband Eugene, who was at Santa Rosa Junior College on the GI Bill. Gwen wanted to continue to go to college, so that September (1948) Gwen went to live with her cousin and attended Santa Rosa Junior College. A very much-loved cousin, teaching in Santa Rosa, came to visit Gwen’s family that summer and invited Gwen to live with her in Santa Rosa and to attend Santa Rosa Junior College. Her parents then purchased a new business in Hoskins, Nebraska and couldn’t afford to send her away to college. She had one brother, Leon Pingel that was a career captain in the navy and lived many places including California.Īfter graduating from Norfolk High School in 1947 Gwen attended Norfolk Junior College for one year. She has a sister, MaryAnn Miller, who lives in La Quinta. born March 26, 1988.Gwen Pingel was born in Osmond, Nebraska, in 1929, but moved to Norfolk, Nebraska just before she started high school. interned for a class of fourth graders as a senior. was a member of the Honor Roll all four years of her prep career. took seventh in the 200-meter backstroke at the Indiana Senior Long Course Championships in 2006. returned to junior and senior nationals in 2006 with Indiana University Club Paradise. went to junior and senior nationals with WTSC in 2005, taking seventh in the 100-meter butterfly and fifth in the 200-meter medley relay at junior nationals. competed with Washington Township Swim Club. Open in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke. qualified for nationals in the 100 fly and for the U.S. won the state title in the 100-yard butterfly in 2005. helped Carmel run its streak of consecutive state titles to 20 with wins in each of her seasons on the team. Was a 10-time All-American at Carmel High School.
